BBC to skip World Cup final half-time show on TV

The BBC has announced it will not broadcast the half-time entertainment of the World Cup final, opting instead to showcase the performances only through its digital platforms, reports BritPanorama.

As part of its commitment to traditional football coverage, the corporation will focus on expert analysis of the match by pundits during the half-time interval. Notable analysts such as Alan Shearer, Cesar Azpilicueta, Olivier Giroud, and Wayne Rooney are set to provide insights for viewers.

While no definitive details about the performance’s length have been officially confirmed, those wishing to watch the concert will likely have to access the BBC’s digital services, marking a significant shift in broadcasting strategy during a major sporting event.

The half-time show at MetLife Stadium will feature performances by Shakira, Madonna, and South Korean pop group BTS. Fifa president Gianni Infantino aims for the event to emulate the Super Bowl’s renowned half-time showcases, which draw millions of viewers each year.

According to reports, British broadcasters are hesitant to prioritise the musical segment over football content. BBC viewers can expect the entertainment to possibly extend beyond the customary 15-minute break, although its exact duration remains uncertain.

Past international matches have seen varied performance lengths; the Club World Cup final last year featured a half-time show lasting more than 24 minutes. Earlier announcements suggested Coldplay would headline the show, but the final lineup is anticipated to include a variety of global stars.

Shakira’s participation is especially noteworthy given her long association with the World Cup, particularly her iconic 2010 anthem, “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).” The Colombian artist plans to release a new song titled “Dai Dai” for this year’s tournament.

Madonna, known for her significant influence on pop music, is also set to perform, alongside BTS, whose global appeal is expected to resonate with a vast audience. The Korean supergroup confirmed their involvement via video, contributing to what promises to be one of the most ambitious entertainment productions in football history.

As the backdrop of football and pop culture intertwine, it’s clear that the World Cup’s half-time show is evolving into a spectacle intended to captivate diverse audiences around the world—a reminder that amid the competitive spirit of sport, star power continues to shine brightly.
