Scheffler hails McIlroy’s longevity ahead of PGA Championship
Scottie Scheffler has expressed his astonishment at the remarkable longevity of Rory McIlroy as both superstars prepare to renew their rivalry at this week’s PGA Championship, reports BritPanorama.
The world’s top two golfers, who have won four of the last five major titles between them, are among the leading contenders heading into the 108th edition of the tournament at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania.
Scheffler, who secured last year’s PGA Championship and Open Championship titles, spoke highly of McIlroy’s prowess on the course. He described the Northern Irishman’s driving ability as the finest he has ever witnessed.
“When you look at just his game, his ability to drive the ball is the best I’ve seen, not only with his speed but how accurate he is as well,” Scheffler said. “He’s able to take out certain things on some golf courses that not many players can do. He does it in a way where he hits a lot of fairways as well.”
However, it is McIlroy’s extraordinary staying power at the summit of world golf that has left Scheffler particularly impressed. The 36-year-old remains an elite competitor, having captured back-to-back Masters titles and a sixth major crown last month, following his first major title at the 2011 US Open.
“Another thing is his longevity. Hard to have an understanding of what it takes to remain at the top for as long as he has,” Scheffler explained, acknowledging the effort required to maintain such high standards over a prolonged period.
McIlroy, in turn, highlighted Scheffler’s consistency and mental resilience as the foundation for his dominance since breaking through in 2022. “He has played consistently excellent golf ever since he got his first win back at the start of 2022, and he hasn’t really dropped off since then,” McIlroy stated.
Furthermore, McIlroy praised Scheffler’s ability to quickly recover from setbacks: “He seems like he has a good mindset of last week’s done, I’ll move on to this week. He operates in the present so well, and that’s one of his super strengths.”
As the PGA Championship unfolds, the anticipation is palpable, with both players vying for further accolades in a sport defined by both skill and steadfastness. This tournament not only showcases their remarkable talents but also speaks to the enduring nature of competition at the highest levels of golf.
