Marc Marquez suffers serious crash at Le Mans

Marc Marquez’s troubling 2026 season took another severe turn this afternoon when the MotoGP world champion was catapulted from his Ducati in a horrifying highside crash at Le Mans, reports BritPanorama.

The Spaniard lost control at Turn 14 on the penultimate lap of the sprint race, with his motorcycle somersaulting across the circuit in what is regarded by many as the most violent incident of the year so far.

Footage of the incident showed the 33-year-old landing heavily on his head before skidding along the track surface, leaving both fans and fellow riders visibly stunned. Despite the alarming circumstances, Marquez remarkably managed to stand upright, although he was clearly in distress and hobbled away from the wreckage.

Medical staff swiftly attended to the reigning champion as he made his way back to the Ducati garage, where it became evident that he was unable to put any weight on his right foot. He was subsequently transported to the circuit’s medical centre for further examination.

The results of X-rays were grim; they revealed a fracture to the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. Ducati communicated the seriousness of the injury in a statement: “Following the crash during the sprint at the French GP and after a medical check and X-ray, Marc Marquez was declared unfit for a fifth metatarsal fracture in his right foot.”

Further details revealed that the team plans for Marquez to fly to Madrid this evening to undergo surgery. This latest setback means he will miss both Sunday’s French Grand Prix and his home race in Barcelona next weekend.

Additionally, Marquez had been scheduled to have surgery on his right shoulder due to an injury sustained at last season’s Indonesian GP, but with the foot injury now requiring immediate attention, this operation will be expedited. The defending champion now faces the daunting task of recovering from two injuries before considering his return to racing.

The crash occurred at a particularly inopportune moment for Marquez, who was already trailing championship leader Marco Bezzecchi by 51 points following a dismal start to his title defence. This season, he has yet to secure a podium finish, a stark contrast to the dominant form that saw him clinch his seventh world championship with Ducati last year. Prior to that success, Marquez had endured several injury-riddled seasons after his remarkable six-title run with Honda between 2013 and 2019.

Now, with at least two races on the sidelines, the Spaniard faces an uphill battle to maintain his championship reign.

As the dust settles from this latest incident, it serves as a poignant reminder of the precarious nature of motorsport, where victories can quickly become battles against injury and recovery.
