Keane and Neville debate Carrick’s accolades on Sky Sports

Roy Keane and Gary Neville engaged in a heated exchange on Sky Sports regarding the level of acclaim being directed at Manchester United’s interim manager Michael Carrick, reports BritPanorama.

Keane challenged what he views as excessive recognition for Carrick’s tactical decisions, specifically in light of Monday’s 2-1 victory against Brentford. The former United captain took issue with the plaudits Carrick received following the match.

“That is where I draw the line, where it is a bit over the top,” Keane declared on air. He pointed to the Brentford fixture as evidence of disproportionate praise, noting United had a comfortable two-goal lead at half-time against a struggling side.

“You are 2-0 up at half-time against Brentford who have not won in five or six, they lost the second half 1-0 and he’s getting thumbs up for that,” Keane stated, reflecting his criticism of Carrick’s management style.

Neville offered a contrasting view, asserting that a tactical adjustment was needed to secure the win. “I think they would have lost the game had he kept the system they had in the first half,” he countered, adding that they were “hanging on for dear life.”

While he acknowledged uncertainty about whether Carrick is the right choice for a permanent role, Neville expressed his initial belief that United should seek a world-class manager with a proven record. “My gut feeling when he got the job was that Man United should go out and appoint a world class manager,” he explained.

Despite questioning Carrick’s credentials, Neville raised a practical concern. “Who is out there right now that is available and can come in and take over from Michael?”

United secured their place in the next season’s Champions League with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford. Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko put the hosts ahead before Liverpool equalised, only for Kobbie Mainoo’s late strike to secure the points.

Keane reflected afterward that the match displayed “the best and the worst” of Carrick’s squad, noting their offensive prowess while also criticising an “ugly” second-half performance.
