Two Green Party candidates arrested for alleged anti-Semitic comments

Two Green Party candidates have been arrested on suspicion of stirring up racial hatred for allegedly posting anti-Semitic comments online, reports BritPanorama.

One candidate is reported to have claimed that attacks on synagogues were “revenge, not anti-Semitism,” while the other allegedly shared an image of a man with a sign stating, “ramming a synagogue isn’t anti-Semitism, it’s revenge.”

In a separate incident, a different candidate posted a picture of a man wearing a Hamas headband with the slogan “Resistance is Freedom.” Both individuals were detained by Metropolitan Police officers on Thursday morning, shortly after an antisemitic terror attack in Golders Green, North London.

The Golders Green attack involved a suspect who attempted to stab police officers before being subdued. Reports indicate that two victims, aged 76 and 34, were treated for stab wounds and transported to a hospital. The suspect, a 45-year-old man with a reported history of serious violence and mental health issues, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The Met Police stated that this individual was connected to another knife attack earlier in the day. Significantly, he had been referred to the anti-terror programme Prevent in 2020, though his case was eventually closed.

Following the Golders Green attack, local leaders expressed concern over the rising number of antisemitic incidents, pointing to a growing climate of intolerance. Jewish leaders were particularly vocal in their criticism of the police response and government measures to address escalating violence. Both the Met Commissioner and a Labour minister faced public backlash during their visit to the site of the attack, with shouts of “shame on you” from community members.

Amidst these developments, Green Party leader Zack Polanski faced criticism after seemingly condemning the police for their handling of the suspect during the arrest. While Scotland Yard lauded the officers for their prompt response, Polanski’s comments drew attention to broader concerns regarding police conduct, especially in sensitive cases involving mental health.

In response to the increased threat against Jewish communities, the government has committed an additional £25 million for enhanced police patrols and security measures around synagogues, schools, and community centres. This funding follows pressure from international leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who emphasized that “words are not enough” in tackling anti-Semitism.

The recent arrests and rising antisemitic incidents highlight ongoing tensions and the imperative for effective measures to safeguard vulnerable communities in the UK.

As the situation evolves, the importance of proactive and transparent governance in combating hate crimes remains paramount in maintaining social cohesion.
