Russia launched one of the largest combined aerial attacks on Kyiv since the start of its full-scale war, firing 41 missiles and 125 drones at the Ukrainian capital overnight, officials said Sunday. The strike killed an 89-year-old woman, wounded 17 people including two children, and caused extensive damage to residential buildings, offices, transport infrastructure and commercial facilities across five districts of the city.
According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, the State Emergency Service and Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the attack involved 10 Zircon anti-ship missiles, 25 Iskander-M ballistic missiles, three Onyx anti-ship missiles, three Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missiles, and 125 attack drones of various types. The main blow fell on Kyiv and the surrounding region, with 23 missiles and 10 drones hitting 20 locations, and debris from downed drones falling at 18 sites.
Civilian casualties and rescue operations
Rescuers recovered the body of the elderly woman in the Shevchenkivskyi district. Seventeen people were injured, among them two children aged 10 and 11. Nine people remain hospitalized, three in serious condition. Five residents were evacuated or rescued during the response. Nearly 600 rescuers and 73 pieces of equipment worked at the scene.
In Shevchenkivskyi district, a fire engulfed a three-story building covering 400 square meters. Firefighters worked to free people trapped inside. More than 10 parked cars were destroyed or damaged, and the shock wave blew out windows in a nearby 25-story residential tower. Two tax authority offices were damaged — the facade of the Main Department of the State Tax Service in Kyiv was hit, and the building of the Shevchenkivskyi District Tax Inspectorate was destroyed by fire and blast. Heavy smoke was reported at the platform of Lukianivska metro station.
In Solomianskyi district, an office building caught fire and a nine-story residential building was damaged. Rescuers extinguished a blaze covering 200 square meters and freed one person from the second floor. Debris damaged a supermarket and nearby non-residential structures.
In Desnianskyi district, fires broke out at two locations in non-residential buildings. Smoke was reported near a shopping center, and several private cars caught fire. In Dniprovskyi district, a fire occurred on the grounds of non-residential buildings, cars burned at one location, and a four-story dormitory building caught fire.
In Sviatoshynskyi district, the roof of a private residential house caught fire. Rescuers quickly extinguished the blaze and saved four residents who were inside.
Transport disruption
The attack caused widespread disruption to ground public transport. Damage to the overhead contact network and debris on roadways forced changes or temporary suspension of several trolleybus, bus and tram routes. Emergency crews from Kyivpastrans and municipal services are working to restore normal operation.
The large number of ballistic missiles launched in a short period reflects an attempt to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defense systems and inflict maximum damage on the city’s infrastructure, according to officials. Kyiv has repeatedly called for more air defense systems and interceptors, as well as permission to strike military targets inside Russia involved in the attacks.
