Israeli strikes escalate tensions in southern Lebanon

Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon resulted in four fatalities and 23 injuries on Friday, prompting President Aoun to condemn the actions and demand accountability from the United States and the international community, reports BritPanorama.

The Israeli military stated that its operations focused on purported Hezbollah weapons storage facilities as well as a command center located within a building previously utilized as a hospital. The military asserted that it employed precision munitions and aerial surveillance techniques to minimize civilian casualties.

This latest escalation marks only the second evacuation warning following the ceasefire announcement in June. The first warning was issued on August 5 for residents of Mansouri, close to Tyre, where leaflets had been distributed urging residents to leave ahead of potential airstrikes.

On Friday, prior to the strikes, Hezbollah criticized the Israeli actions as an attempt to exert pressure on the Lebanese government, which has been engaged in direct negotiations with Israel under U.S. mediation—talks that Hezbollah has officially opposed.

Since March 2, when Hezbollah initiated hostilities against Israel in support of Iran, the death toll from Israeli strikes in Lebanon has risen above 4,300.
