Tottenham signs Sandro Tonali for £100 million
Tottenham Hotspur has reached an agreement for a £100 million transfer of midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, reports BritPanorama.
The total fee includes a base payment of £92.5 million, alongside potential add-ons amounting to £7.5 million based on performance criteria. This transfer marks a significant investment for Spurs, exceeding their previous record set just a day earlier with the acquisition of Matheus Fernandes from West Ham, valued at £85 million.
With Tonali’s arrival, Tottenham’s summer spending has surged to approximately £237 million. In addition to Tonali, the club has already secured the services of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million, as well as free transfers for defenders Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka, broadening their defensive options.
Tonali, who reportedly will earn over £275,000 weekly, drew interest from other Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester City, but ultimately chose to work under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
In terms of outgoings, goalkeeper Luka Vuskovic has left for Brighton in a deal worth up to £50 million. Tottenham’s recent transfer strategy appears aggressive, a notable shift from previous seasons under chairman Daniel Levy, who historically imposed strict wage controls. The Lewis family, the current majority stakeholders, have now pledged financial backing aimed at promptly revitalizing the squad after a tumultuous season that saw Spurs narrowly avoid relegation.
De Zerbi, who managed the team to safety in the 2025-26 season, has indicated a need for the club to learn from recent mistakes. The club is expected to announce further signings as they prepare for the new season, aiming for a more competitive performance following last year’s struggles.
Spurs are clearly responding to the pressure of expectations, proving that in football, fortunes can change swiftly — a compelling reminder of the relentless nature of transfer markets and team dynamics. As fans await the new season, the stakes are higher than ever, intertwining hope with trepidation for what’s to come.
