Thomas Tuchel hails Wonderwall as potential England anthem for World Cup

Thomas Tuchel has expressed hopes that the iconic Oasis track “Wonderwall” could become England’s anthem as they progress in the World Cup this summer, reports BritPanorama. The England manager described the 1995 hit as a “brilliant song” following the Three Lions’ exhilarating 4-2 win over Croatia last week, during which players and supporters united in singing the song.

In the aftermath of the match held at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and several of their teammates were seen joining fans for the spontaneous rendition. Tuchel remarked that the camaraderie displayed between the team and their supporters was a testament to the energy and spirit of the moment.

“Hopefully, it becomes an anthem because that’s exactly what a tournament like this is for,” the 52-year-old stated. “It’s for the connection between fans and the team – they felt the energy, the team spirit. It was a beautiful moment and it meant a lot to all of us. Hopefully, we can recreate this in the next game,” he added.

As the World Cup unfolds, the association of “Wonderwall” with England’s journey has deepened, with the song’s popularity among supporters increasing. Noel Gallagher, the song’s writer, has welcomed this embrace by fans. England is set to face Ghana at the 64,400-capacity Gillette Stadium on Tuesday, where a victory would secure their progression to the knockout stages. In a previous comment, Tuchel indicated that while he typically does not sing “God Save The King” before matches, he would consider joining in should England reach the World Cup final.

Approximately 20,000 England supporters attended the match against Croatia, and the collective singalong has quickly become an emblematic scene from the opening week of their campaign in North America, with significant turnout expected for the Ghana fixture as well.

England last met Ghana in 2011, with the match concluding in a 1-1 draw, highlighting the long-standing rivalry between the teams. As the players look ahead, the infectious energy of “Wonderwall” serves as a hopeful backdrop to their aspirations on the global stage.

In sport, the music selection can often reflect deeper connections, underscoring how nostalgia and collective memory knead together in the heat of competition. As the Three Lions carry that spirit forward, the stage is set for fans and players alike to reaffirm their bond with each note sung.
