Thomas Tuchel impresses Harry Kane with ceremonial first pitch during England's World Cup campaign

Tuchel throws first pitch at Kansas City Royals game

Harry Kane has admitted Thomas Tuchel was “a little nervous” after the England manager traded football for baseball by throwing the ceremonial first pitch at a Kansas City Royals game, reports BritPanorama.

Less than 48 hours after guiding the Three Lions to an entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia in their World Cup opener, Tuchel took centre stage at Kauffman Stadium ahead of the Royals’ clash with the St Louis Cardinals. The German was watched on by England captain Kane, as well as defenders Dan Burn and Djed Spence, while delivering the opening pitch to Royals manager Matt Quatraro.

Kane, who scored twice against Croatia to move on to 10 World Cup goals, was impressed by his manager’s efforts and noted that the occasion appeared to present some challenges for Tuchel. “He got a strike, so fair play to him,” Kane told KansasCity.com. “It’s not easy. It’s actually… that was the first time I’ve been up mound in 12 years, so you forget how far away it actually is.”

Tuchel’s performance was generally well-received, with Kane acknowledging the difficulty of throwing a pitch at that level. “So, watching the professionals do it, and they’re launching that ball at 90, 100 miles per hour, it’s pretty impressive. So the boss has done pretty well. I’ll give him that. He was a little nervous before.”

Kane himself has previous experience of baseball’s ceremonial duties, having thrown first pitches at games involving the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs. Following the game, the Bayern Munich striker enjoyed a more relaxed recovery day in Kansas City, reflecting on the events with his teammates.

Posting on social media, Kane wrote: “Great recovery day with the boys at the baseball. Would love to give batting a go one day! Thanks for having us @Royals.” England’s players were treated as special guests by the Royals organisation, something Kane said was greatly appreciated.

“We really appreciate it,” he added. “I can say, for us to come here and get the treatment that we have already is obviously great. And I’m not sure where we’re sitting, but I’m sure the seats will be great, as well. So, yeah, all we can say is thank you to them.”

While several senior stars enjoyed an afternoon at the ballpark, England’s fringe players remained focused on football matters. Those who were not involved in the match against Croatia faced MLS outfit Sporting Kansas City in a behind-closed-doors friendly, with Ivan Toney notably scoring a hat-trick in a comfortable 5-1 victory.

“It was great, great for the guys who didn’t get enough minutes yesterday to top up the tank,” Kane said. “It was a good test. Thanks for Sporting for doing the game, I thought they held themselves to a great standard.”

Kane is still relishing England’s memorable win over Croatia, celebrating alongside supporters while Oasis anthem “Wonderwall” echoed around AT&T Stadium. “That was one of my favourite ever moments in an England shirt and especially at a major tournament,” Kane said. “Hopefully, we can have a few more.”

With sport continuing to stir emotion and excitement, Kane’s reflection on the harmony shared with fans after the Croatia win serves as a pleasant reminder of the beautiful connections forged in the pursuit of glory. The intersection of football and new experiences illustrates how athletes adapt, finding joy even in unfamiliar territories. Always something charming when the games we love create unexpected moments.
