Stokes and Vaughan embroiled in public spats ahead of Ashes series

Media war over Ashes preparations deemed exaggerated

Former England bowler Chris Woakes has insisted that the media war that has broken out between Ben Stokes and Michael Vaughan has been “blown out of proportion”, reports BritPanorama.

In the build-up to The Ashes this winter, there has been criticism directed towards the England squad regarding insufficient preparation ahead of the rigorous Test series, which commences this week and extends into early next year.

Australia is hosting The Ashes this year, and England players have had only a couple of weeks to acclimatise to the notable climatic differences. Vaughan has publicly lambasted the team’s preparation, along with other former players such as Ian Botham and Graham Gooch, prompting a strong response from current captain Stokes.

Stokes lashed out at the former England stars, branding them ‘has-beens’, which incited a rebuttal from Vaughan and has led to what some are calling a mini civil war within English cricket—a situation that is likely to amuse the Australians.

However, Woakes, who retired from international cricket following a shoulder injury and a subsequent omission from The Ashes squad, believes the uproar has been excessive. Speaking exclusively to GB News, he remarked, “I think it’s a little bit blown out of proportion. Obviously past players are always going to have their say.”

He clarified, “I know Ben called the past players has-beens, but I think he didn’t necessarily mean it in a derogative way. It’s just all pre-Ashes talk, isn’t it?” Woakes emphasised that most past England players genuinely want the team to excel, stating, “As soon as you retire, you become a fan.”

Stokes, appointed as England Test captain in 2022, has overseen one Ashes series, a thrilling 2-2 draw in 2023, with adverse weather significantly impacting the matches. England has a dismal record in Australia, having secured just two victories in the last 38 years, with the last win occurring during the infamous 2011 series, led by Andrew Strauss.

Woakes expressed optimism regarding Stokes’ leadership, noting, “I believe we’ve got a great chance…the most important thing for us is obviously keeping our bowlers fit, but we need to keep Ben Stokes fit as well. We’re a different team when he leads us.”

As England gears up to commence their Ashes campaign in Perth, they face initial challenges, including the absence of Australia’s captain Pat Cummins and influential bowler Josh Hazlewood. Despite the hurdles, Stokes’s strategic mindset may significantly influence the outcome of this anticipated series.
