In a notable shift from tradition, only one fixture will occur on Boxing Day this year, with Manchester United hosting Newcastle at Old Trafford at 8pm.
The broadcaster’s coverage during the holiday period will extend considerably. Following the Boxing Day match, six games will be televised on 30 December, headlined by Arsenal’s clash with Aston Villa at the Emirates.
This unusual scheduling results from the expansion of European club competitions, which has imposed major challenges on domestic fixture planning. The Premier League has directly addressed these scheduling issues, citing the need for adjustments that have led to a reduced number of weekends available for matches. The League confirmed that this revised calendar allows for a thirty-three weekend competition while still maintaining the overall 380-match format established in 1995.
Despite the challenges this year, officials assured fans that next season will see a return to more traditional Boxing Day fixtures, as the date will fall on a Saturday. This will facilitate the inclusion of additional matches, catering to the expectations of fans.
The festive period continues with a New Year’s Day offering, featuring four televised fixtures, including Manchester United against Wolves and Liverpool hosting Leeds.
