Shaun Murphy aims for longevity in snooker career
Shaun Murphy has revealed that he plans to keep playing snooker for as long as possible amid his ongoing wait for a second World Snooker Championship title, reports BritPanorama.
The 43-year-old recently participated in a gripping match against Wu Yize at the Crucible Theatre, ultimately losing in a tightly contested battle that went down to the final frames.
Murphy’s sole World Championship victory came in 2005, when he entered the tournament as a 125/1 outsider. Since that triumph, he has faced defeat at the final hurdle three times, with losses to Stuart Bingham in 2009 and Mark Selby in 2021, preceding his latest challenge against Wu.
Snooker players today tend to have longer careers. Members of the Class of 92, including Ronnie O’Sullivan, John Higgins, and Mark Williams, continue to compete at high levels. Murphy expressed his determination to follow suit, stating, “I mean, the Class of 92 have totally rewritten the rules on that. When I started playing snooker, I would have already been retired by my age.” He acknowledged that those players show no signs of stepping back from the sport, setting a target for those coming up behind them.
However, Murphy also noted that being on the professional circuit can be physically demanding. “Snooker isn’t a great profession to ask the body to take repetitively for 35 years,” he admitted, highlighting the increasing challenges players face with the global travel schedule associated with the sport.
In recent years, Murphy has embraced the travel opportunities that snooker provides, finding joy in exploring new places, though he acknowledges the additional physical toll that comes with it. He remarked, “I’m very grateful that snooker has given me that opportunity to go off and see these far flung reaches of the planet.” His commitment to maintaining flexibility and taking care of his physical health has become a priority in light of his extensive career.
Addressing changes in fan behaviour, Murphy noted an incident during his recent match where a spectator shouted a disparaging remark. He reflected on the evolving dynamics between players and audiences, stating, “Society’s changing and an audience is reflective of society, isn’t it?” He observed how technological advancements, such as mobile phones, have altered the way fans engage with live sports.
