Seagulls Eleven wins at Epsom Downs

A horse owned by a selection of footballers, including James Milner, Lewis Dunk, and Danny Welbeck, triumphed at Epsom Downs. Hugo Palmer’s four-year-old, Seagulls Eleven, came through as a 5-2 favourite in the Group Three event, reports BritPanorama.

Oisin Murphy closely contended in the early stages with Boiling Point as they navigated Tattenham Corner. As the race progressed, Seagulls Eleven surged ahead, ultimately securing victory for Palmer.

Palmer expressed his initial concern during the race, stating, “I thought we were done, I must admit. Luckily, he put his head down where it mattered.” He praised Seagulls Eleven’s toughness and Murphy’s rapport with the horse, noting, “he’s a pleasure to ride these days after all the difficulties earlier in his career. Now it’s exuberance, and he’s having fun.” He also mentioned his speculation about another competitor, “I did think Persica was going better, but we’ve probably outstayed him.”

Considering future races, Palmer remarked that the horse’s previous performances suggested smaller fields suit him, hinting at potential entries for the Sussex Stakes, among others. Meanwhile, Aidan O’Brien is gearing up for his 12th Derby victory, which he described as the “ultimate test.”

Palmer emphasised the distinct challenges of Epsom, saying, “It tests them mentally, physically, left and right. There is no second to Epsom anywhere in the world.” His portrayal reflects the significance of the location in the world of horse racing, underlining its unique demands on both horses and jockeys.

The day’s events encapsulated the mixture of thrills inherent to the sport—as much a contest of equine endurance as it is a celebration of human partnership and ambition.
