Scott McTominay honoured with new £20 banknote featuring iconic bicycle kick

Scott McTominay featured on limited edition £20 banknote

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has been selected to feature on a limited edition £20 banknote, reports BritPanorama.

The Bank of Scotland unveiled the note, featuring an image inspired by McTominay’s bicycle kick against Denmark. Only 100 notes have been printed, with 50 available through a combination of collector auctions, a prize draw, and two pop-up locations in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Scotland is heading to their first World Cup since 1998, securing their place with a 4-2 win over Denmark at Hampden Park in November. McTominay scored the opening goal in the contest, sending Scottish fans wild with his sensational strike.

Reacting to being on a banknote, the midfielder told Sky Sports: “It’s a bit surreal. The first time that I was told my family was incredible, to be honest. Obviously, things like that don’t happen often. So to have the opportunity to put obviously a great goal on top of a banknote is something that’s a bit surreal to be honest. I’m just extremely proud and want to go to the World Cup and give a great account of myself and show everybody that Scotland is a really good team.”

Auction and prize draw proceeds will be given to Crisis Scotland, a national charity for people experiencing homelessness. The online auction will run from June 26, giving fans the chance to enter the prize draw for the banknote. Two pop-up areas will be in Glasgow and Edinburgh, where fans will be given the chance to guess a code to open a vault.

Emma Noble, chair of the Scottish executive committee at the Bank of Scotland, said: “Securing qualification in such dramatic fashion is a moment fans will never forget, and we wanted to mark it in a way that’s rooted in Scottish identity.” She further noted, “Like football, banknotes have long been part of our country’s story, and this limited edition £20 note combines those two traditions with a modern, creative twist. Scott’s overhead kick is already regarded as one of the nation’s greatest ever goals.” The banknote aims to raise funds for Crisis as they work to end homelessness across Scotland.

The 2026 World Cup kicks off June 11, running until July 19, in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This edition will feature 48 teams, making it the largest World Cup to date. Scotland has drawn a tough group, facing Haiti on June 14, Morocco on June 19 in Boston, and Brazil on June 24 in Miami.

As McTominay prepares to leave his mark on both the pitch and in the hearts of fans, one can’t help but sense the weight of expectation on this young team. Scotland’s upcoming matches promise to evoke not just a history of sporting pride, but a renewed hope for a nation’s love affair with football.
