Scotland secures 4-1 victory over Curacao in home friendly
Scotland recovered from an early setback to defeat Curacao 4-1 at Hampden Park this afternoon, securing their first home friendly triumph in ten years ahead of next month’s World Cup, reports BritPanorama.
The match began with a surprising lead for the visitors, as former Manchester United winger Tahith Chong put Curacao ahead in the 17th minute. Chong demonstrated agility and skill, latching onto a long ball and slotted a left-footed shot inside the post.
Scotland’s fortunes shifted dramatically when Curacao’s Jurgen Locadia was dismissed after a VAR review upgraded his initial yellow card for catching Aaron Hickey with a forearm to red. With the odds heavily against them, Curacao struggled to maintain their lead.
Scotland equalised just before halftime through 19-year-old Findlay Curtis, who became the nation’s youngest goalscorer since Danny Wilson in November 2010. The second half saw Lawrence Shankland score twice within four minutes, bolstering Scotland’s dominance. Ryan Christie rounded off the scoring with a penalty nine minutes from time after Curtis was fouled in the box.
Despite the comfortable final scoreline, Scotland manager Steve Clarke expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s performance in the opening period, noting, “The game didn’t reflect how well Curacao actually played; the scoreline ran away from them a little.” He emphasized the need for match fitness among players who had seen limited action in recent club fixtures.
Regarding injured midfielder Billy Gilmour, Clarke remained cautiously optimistic, stating, “We’re not too sure how bad Billy Gilmour’s injury is right now. He will be assessed overnight, fingers crossed that the wee man is fine.” As Scotland prepares for their World Cup opener against Haiti, set in Boston a week after facing Bolivia in New Jersey on 7 June, the manager highlighted the requirement for the entire squad to contribute for success in North America.
The upcoming World Cup marks Scotland’s first men’s appearance in 28 years, with Clarke noting, “The players were angry with themselves for missing out on Qatar 2022 and in Germany, so hopefully they can use that as fuel to make sure we give ourselves a really good chance of getting out of the group.” While today’s victory showcased Scotland’s potential, only time will tell if they can make an impact on the world stage.
