Sabastian Sawe sets historic sub-two-hour marathon record at London Marathon

Kenyan runner Sabastian Sawe shatters marathon barrier

Sabastian Sawe has made history by completing the London Marathon with a time of 1:59:30, breaking what many viewed as an impossible barrier in the world of athletics, reports BritPanorama.

At 29 years old, Sawe has accomplished a feat no athlete had managed in official competition: running 26.2 miles in under two hours. This victory marks his second consecutive triumph in London, having won in his debut last year.

Born on March 16, 1996, Sawe grew up in a remote village in western Kenya, devoid of electricity and modern amenities. He currently trains at a high-altitude camp, where he sees his wife and son only twice a month, showcasing his dedication to the sport.

His uncle, Abraham Chepkirwok, competed in the 800 metres at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, providing Sawe with early exposure to elite athletics. A teacher also played a pivotal role in his development, impressing upon him that “Running is not just talent; it’s your fortune and your future.”

Driven by this ethos, Sawe’s ascent in the sport saw him achieve four victories from his four marathon attempts. His journey began in December 2024 at the Valencia Marathon, where he clocked a leading time of 2:02:05. This was followed by a winning performance in London in April 2025 with a time of 2:02:27, and a subsequent victory in Berlin in September in 2:02:16.

In a post-race interview, Sawe expressed his excitement: “I saw the time and I was so excited. First of all, I want to thank the crowds. They help a lot. You feel so happy and strong and pushing. What comes for me today is not for me alone but all of us in London.”

In the lead-up to his Berlin win, Sawe underwent 25 out-of-competition drug tests by the Athletics Integrity Unit, a move aimed at proving his commitment to clean sport. “The main reason was to show that I am clean, and I am doing it the right way,” he declared.

Sawe’s latest performance encapsulates the dedication and discipline required to achieve unprecedented milestones in athletics. It serves as a vivid reminder that even in a world often marred by controversy, remarkable achievements can still emerge from the most earnest of efforts.
