Israel bars left-wing politicians following UK sanctions
A dozen left-wing political figures have been barred from Israel after the country imposed retaliatory sanctions on Britain, reports BritPanorama.
This action follows the UK’s ban on imports from illegal West Bank settlements, which was accompanied by Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband’s assertion that certain settlers were guilty of “ethnic cleansing.”
The politicians affected by the ban include Jeremy Corbyn, Diane Abbott, Zarah Sultana, John McDonnell, and all five Green Party MPs. The Green Party stated that it stands “proud” of its representatives for advocating Palestinian rights.
In addition to the travel ban, Israel declared it will close the British consulate in Jerusalem and expel UK officials from a Gaza support centre. Other measures include halting British training of Palestinian Authority forces and prohibiting the entry of London-based, pro-Hamas law firm head Fahad Ansari into Israel.
This backlash from Israel comes in light of the UK’s recent foreign policy shifts under Miliband, who has faced significant criticism from Israeli leaders for his comments on settler violence, which they branded as false. Miliband’s remarks imply a reshaping of British diplomatic relations, particularly regarding the ongoing situation in the West Bank.
