Rory McIlroy warns LIV Golf faces uncertain future amid Middle East funding issues

Rory McIlroy warns of LIV Golf’s precarious future

Rory McIlroy has claimed LIV Golf is in a “pretty precarious spot” after reports emerged that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) will withdraw funding from the breakaway tour at the end of the season, reports BritPanorama.

The four-time major champion suggested that the uncertainty surrounding LIV’s future has left players stunned, while also highlighting the risks taken by golfers who defected from the PGA Tour. He articulated the challenges ahead for the organisation amidst a changing landscape in the Middle East.

Speaking about the reports, McIlroy remarked, “It was always a possibility that could happen. With everything that’s happening in the Middle East, that had a lot to do with it.” He further elaborated, “Their priorities shifted and that leaves LIV in a pretty precarious spot, but that was always a possibility.”

McIlroy noted that many within the golfing world sensed the shift before the players themselves did, indicating a feeling of having the rug pulled out from under them. “That was the risk that those guys chose to take and there’s a lot of uncertainty in the air right now,” he said.

He expressed concerns over the potential for a drastically different schedule if LIV Golf continues. Currently, the organisation is under scrutiny for its long-term viability, despite substantial financial backing from the PIF. McIlroy suggested that if LIV does manage to create a schedule for the next year, fundamental changes will be necessary.

Having been a vocal critic of LIV Golf since its inception in 2022, McIlroy has consistently defended the PGA Tour. He previously described defectors as having “taken the easy way out” and questioned whether the format of 54-hole events without cuts could ever replicate the competitive tension of traditional tournaments.

However, McIlroy’s stance softened after the PGA Tour’s surprising agreement with PIF in 2023. He acknowledged having been “too judgmental” and recognised the need for unity within the sport. Despite this, McIlroy maintains that LIV Golf has struggled to engage fans and broadcasters effectively.

As uncertainty looms over the league’s future and the implications for players who have committed to multi-year contracts, McIlroy’s insights add to existing speculation about LIV Golf’s trajectory. The future remains uncertain, echoing his initial concerns regarding its sustainability within the sport.

In the ever-evolving world of golf, the shifting alliances and financial undercurrents remind us that for all the money involved, the game retains an unpredictable nature — one that can leave even the most ambitious ventures in jeopardy.
