Rory McIlroy eyes record as DP World Tour season nears conclusion
Rory McIlroy is setting his sights on a potential “amazing record” as he approaches the final three tournaments of the DP World Tour this season, reports BritPanorama.
The Northern Irish golfer secured a tied second place at the BMW PGA Championship held at Wentworth last weekend, placing him in a favorable position as the season draws to a close. The result narrows the gap between him and Race to Dubai leader Patrick Reed, who withdrew from the tournament due to a wrist injury.
Last year, McIlroy claimed a seventh Order of Merit title, just one short of equalling Colin Montgomerie’s record. With only three tournaments remaining on the DP World Tour, including the India Championship and two events in the United Arab Emirates, McIlroy sees an opportunity to enhance his standings further.
Reflecting on his ambitions, McIlroy expressed excitement about the upcoming competitions. “I have three events until the end of my DP World Tour season. I’m not sure what Patrick’s schedule looks like coming up, but I feel like I have enough opportunities,” he stated. Acknowledging his previous experience in India, he noted, “I’ll know it a little bit better; and then going to Abu Dhabi and Dubai where I had a lot of success in my career.”
McIlroy paid tribute to Reed following the latter’s withdrawal, mentioning their competitive history. “Obviously Patrick and I have had quite the battles over the years, whether it be Ryder Cup, final round in a major. He’s a great competitor and he’s played great all year,” he remarked, acknowledging Reed’s perseverance despite the setback.
Reed’s injury occurred while navigating a challenging shot during the ninth hole, which led to his withdrawal and left the competition open. JJ Spaun ultimately claimed victory in the tournament with a score of 17-under-par, finishing two shots ahead of a group including McIlroy, Aaron Rai, Adam Scott, and Manuel Elvira, who shared the second position.
