Referee injured with cramp during USA’s match against Australia

Experienced referee Felix Zwayer went down injured with a cramp in stoppage time of the USA’s win over Australia in Seattle, reports BritPanorama.

The 45-year-old required assistance from the United States’ Florian Balogun and Australia’s Aiden O’Neill, who stretched out the official’s left leg after he fell to the turf. The referee was given an energy gel by fourth official Katia Garcia to help him see out the last few minutes.

Zwayer managed to return to his feet and completed the match, which concluded with a 2-0 victory for the United States, pushing them closer to the knockout stages. An own goal by Australia’s Cameron Burgess set the tone for the game, which was further complemented by a header from Alex Freeman just before half-time.

The showdown took place under warm conditions, with temperatures reaching 26C, prompting hydration breaks for players. The USA’s performance was dominant, highlighting their potential as they won their opening game against Paraguay 4-1 without their star player, Christian Pulisic, who missed the match due to a calf injury.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed pride in the team’s adaptability, stating, “If we want to win the competition, we need the whole team. And all the players need to be important.” This depth will be crucial as the tournament progresses and the stakes increase.

Australia, needing just a point against Paraguay in their final group match to secure qualification, faces a pivotal moment. The upcoming encounter will determine whether they can join the US in advancing from Group D.

As the tournament unfolds, this incident serves as a reminder of the demands placed on officials in high-stakes matches, where even the most experienced can face unexpected hurdles. It highlights a broader narrative of resilience and adaptability that defines both players and officials in the heat of competition.
