Record applications for 2027 London Marathon
The 2027 London Marathon has shattered its previous ballot record, attracting an astonishing 1,338,544 entries for the race scheduled for 25 April, reports BritPanorama.
This marks a significant increase from last year’s record of 1,133,813 applications, a surge likely fueled by the extraordinary events witnessed in London during the recent marathon. Hopeful participants will find out in early July if they have won a place through a random draw.
The latest figures indicate a notable shift in local interest, with over a million applications originating from within the UK. Furthermore, the gender balance of registrations is nearing parity, marking a positive trend in the inclusivity of the event.
The heightened interest follows a weekend of remarkable athletic performances. Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe made history by completing a marathon in under two hours—specifically, 1:59:30—setting a new standard in competitive conditions. This achievement surpasses the previous record set by Kelvin Kiptum in 2023 by over a minute.
Sawe’s success has been celebrated widely, reflecting the growing allure of marathon running in the UK and beyond. “This astonishing total of applicants firmly establishes London as the world’s most sought-after marathon,” shared Hugh Brasher, chief executive of London Marathon Events. “Nothing else comes close. Our mission is to inspire people of every age and ability to get active – and these extraordinary numbers show the massive draw and power of the London Marathon,” he commented.
Additionally, the event produced other remarkable performances, including Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, who recorded a new women’s world record at 2:15:41. Notably, debutant Yomif Kejelcha also broke the two-hour barrier, finishing second in 1:59:41, with Jacob Kiplimo completing the podium in 2:00:28—both times faster than Kiptum’s old mark.
In terms of overall participation, this year’s marathon concluded with a record 59,830 runners crossing the finish line, affirming its status as the largest annual one-day fundraising event globally.
Looking ahead, organisers are considering whether the 2027 London Marathon might be held across two days to accommodate the overwhelming demand, a testament to the race’s enduring appeal and significance within the global sporting calendar.
As the anticipation builds, it is clear that the marathon continues to inspire not just seasoned runners but thousands of newcomers as well. The convergence of record-breaking athletic achievements and enthusiastic participation underscores how the London Marathon remains a focal point of unity and ambition in British society.
