Abbie Donnelly makes history with European Championships bronze
Abbie Donnelly has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first British woman to win an individual European Championships marathon medal, securing bronze in Birmingham on Sunday, reports BritPanorama.
The 29-year-old completed the race in two hours, 27 minutes and 33 seconds, finishing behind Hungary’s Lili Anna Vindics-Toth and the dominant champion Alisa Vainio. Her performance ended a 44-year wait for a British woman to finish inside the top eight in the event.
Donnelly’s accomplishment is complemented by her contribution to Great Britain’s team gold, achieved alongside teammates Natasha Wilson and Rose Harvey. The current achievement marks a significant moment for British women’s marathon running, with the last notable result being Kath Binns’ ninth-place finish in 1982.
“It means everything to do this here in Birmingham,” Donnelly stated. She expressed the thrill of racing in front of a home crowd, highlighting the unique experience of hearing her name cheered during the event. This bronze medal represents a breakthrough for the sport, bringing renewed attention to British women in marathon running.
Donnelly faced a demanding course that tested endurance, noting the challenges posed by its hilly terrain. Vainio, who led the race from the outset, set a championship record with a time of 2:22:26, improving the previous European Championships record by nearly three minutes. Meanwhile, Donnelly strategically ran alongside Wilson until the race began to shift.
Donnelly acknowledged the support from Wilson during the race, describing it as a “massive” boost. Wilson’s fifth-place finish and Harvey’s 14th position collectively ensured that Great Britain outperformed both Italy and Spain in the team standings, marking the country’s seventh gold medal at the championships.
The achievement is part of a remarkable transition for Donnelly, who previously excelled in cross country events, winning two European Cross Country Championships team gold medals. Her debut at the European Championships in Rome in 2024 also saw her helping the team to its gold in the half-marathon.
“It’s so exciting, we were talking about it yesterday about how we’d love to get a gold,” she said, reflecting on the team’s success. “I’m so proud of the whole team.
