Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set for shock return to Manchester United

Manchester United are finalising a contract with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that will see the Norwegian make a stunning return to Old Trafford, reports BritPanorama.

The Red Devils dismissed Ruben Amorim on Monday, following tensions with the club’s hierarchy. The 40-year-old’s future at the club deteriorated after he publicly indicated that he was not receiving adequate support, with an explosive press conference following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds proving to be the tipping point for decision-makers Jason Wilcox, Omar Berrada, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

In the wake of Amorim’s departure, United are looking to appoint an interim boss to guide the club through the remainder of the season. Darren Fletcher will take charge for the Premier League match against Burnley tonight at Turf Moor, with expectations that he will also manage the FA Cup fixture against Brighton on Sunday.

While Fletcher takes the reins temporarily, United are exploring longer-term options. Michael Carrick is considered a candidate following his departure from Middlesbrough last summer. However, Solskjaer currently leads the pack, poised to return after his previous sacking in November 2021, having previously transformed the club’s fortunes before his exit.

According to a report from Norwegian publication VG, discussions between Solskjaer and the club regarding a contract are underway, with speculation that the agreement could be finalised by as soon as Friday. Solskjaer’s continued residence in Cheshire would facilitate a swift move back to the club he once managed.

During his last tenure, Solskjaer achieved notable victories, including wins against Arsenal, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain. After taking over as permanent manager in March 2019, he secured third and second-placed league finishes and brought the team to the Europa League final in 2021.

However, following the high-profile signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, results faltered, culminating in a dismal 4-1 defeat to Watford that led to his dismissal.

Fletcher has expressed a sense of surrealism regarding his temporary managerial role, highlighting the honour of leading a team with such a rich history. With United’s match against Burnley scheduled for 8:15 PM, there remains a palpable sense of anticipation surrounding the club’s future direction.

Amidst all the upheaval, Solskjaer’s potential return serves as a reminder of the club’s turbulent path in recent years — a path where nostalgia and ambition often clash, underscoring the unique pressures that come with managing one of football’s giants.
