Enzo Fernández joins Manchester City in record-breaking transfer
Enzo Fernández completed a dramatic £125m deadline day switch from Chelsea to Manchester City on Wednesday, matching the British transfer record in the process, reports BritPanorama.
The Argentine midfielder, 25, has signed a contract that will keep him at the Etihad until 2031. His arrival marks a significant shift in City’s midfield dynamics, particularly following a summer of substantial investment.

During his time at Chelsea, Fernández won several trophies, including the Club World Cup and the Europa Conference League. However, the club never mounted a serious challenge for the Premier League title during his tenure, and signals of his desire to leave became evident, particularly after Chelsea imposed a two-match internal ban in April following his interest in joining Real Madrid.
Despite issuing an emotional farewell to Chelsea, saying he had grown attached to the shirt and badge, his comments upon arriving at City suggested he views the move as a step up. “Manchester City have to win every trophy they compete for,” he asserted, indicating the high expectations associated with his new club.
This transfer caps a major overhaul in City’s midfield, with the club having spent a combined £326m on new central players this summer. Alongside Fernández, City welcomed Elliot Anderson for £116m and teenage talent Ayyoub Bouaddi in an £85m deal, while also seeing several established players depart.
Fernández expressed enthusiasm about the squad being assembled, stating, “The team City are building this year is incredible, and it makes me really happy that they are going in that direction.” With a history of 20 trophies won in the past decade, he is keen to contribute to City’s ongoing success: “To come to this club knowing we are going to win many trophies together,” he concluded, was his sole objective.
