Max Dowman becomes Champions League’s youngest player
Arsenal’s teenage sensation Max Dowman etched his name into football history on Tuesday evening, becoming the Champions League’s youngest-ever player at just 15 years and 308 days old, reports BritPanorama.
The prodigious midfielder entered the pitch as a substitute during the Gunners’ European encounter with Slavia Prague in the Czech capital. His 72nd-minute introduction saw him replace Leandro Trossard, shattering the previous record held by Germany international Youssoufa Moukoko, who was 16 years and 18 days old when he appeared against Zenit St Petersburg in December 2020.
Dowman’s milestone makes him the competition’s first 15-year-old participant, with the youngster not celebrating his 16th birthday until December. The north London club had already secured a comfortable advantage when their record-breaking talent took to the field.
Bukayo Saka converted from the penalty spot to give Arsenal the lead at half-time, before Mikel Merino struck twice after the interval. His meteoric ascent through Arsenal’s youth ranks began when he joined the under-18 squad in September 2023, aged merely 13. The following year, he established another milestone by becoming the UEFA Youth League’s youngest goalscorer during a 4-1 loss to Atalanta last September.
The midfielder’s exceptional development saw him training regularly with Arteta’s senior squad throughout last season.
