Mauricio Pochettino extends contract with US national team
Mauricio Pochettino has committed his future to the United States national team, signing a new contract that extends his tenure until 2030 despite overseeing a disappointing end to their World Cup campaign. His decision comes on the heels of a heavy last-16 defeat to Belgium this summer, reports BritPanorama.
The new agreement was solidified after discussions for a fresh deal gained momentum in recent weeks. The 54-year-old formally signed the contract on Monday, following the expiration of his previous deal at the end of the tournament.
Following the USA’s disappointing exit, Pochettino faced scrutiny regarding his future in the role. However, he opted to remain in charge, citing his belief in the long-term potential of football in the United States as a key factor in his decision.
“Working together with US Soccer over the past two years, it has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the Men’s National Team program even stronger,” he stated. The passion demonstrated by fans during the World Cup further solidified his confidence in the country’s footballing prospects.
His new contract ensures he will oversee the US team through upcoming international tournaments, including the 2027 and 2029 editions of the Concacaf Nations League and Gold Cup. If the team secures qualification, he will also participate in the 2030 World Cup, scheduled to be co-hosted by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain.
Significantly, the financial backing for Pochettino’s appointment comes from notable figures, including Kenneth C. Griffin, founder and CEO of Citadel, and Scott Goodwin, co-founder of Diameter. US Soccer officials believe that the extended deal will provide necessary stability as they prepare for major upcoming competitions.
JT Batson, chief executive and secretary general of US Soccer, expressed his support for Pochettino, stating, “Mauricio and his staff believe in the future of soccer in the United States, and our new project allows us to build on progress of the USMNT and the momentum of US Soccer.”
Despite a challenging World Cup, the United States experienced one of their strongest outings in recent history, topping their group for just the third time and advancing past Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32. Pochettino’s backroom staff, including assistant coaches Jesus Perez and Miguel D’Agostino, are expected to stay on as they work towards future ambitions.
