Lionel Messi trains alone as Argentina prepares for World Cup

Lionel Messi trained alone in Argentina’s first World Cup practice session as the holders get their preparations underway, reports BritPanorama.

The footballing icon has been dealing with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring but is expected to be ready for Argentina’s World Cup opener against Algeria.

Argentina’s football association stated that Messi worked on “specific exercises” to address his fitness concerns. They continued: “The players who are suffering from niggles and injuries continue to work with the physiotherapy team on specific exercises on the pitch and are making good progress.”

Despite the concerns regarding his fitness, Messi is set to lead out Argentina for his record sixth World Cup. He was instrumental in the previous tournament, having lifted the World Cup trophy in Qatar just four years ago.

Argentina will play its last warm-up game against Iceland on June 9, before beginning their campaign in Group J. Following their match against Algeria, they will face Austria and conclude their group stage against Jordan.

Messi was forced off the pitch during Inter Miami’s thrilling 6-4 triumph against Philadelphia Union on May 25, departing in the 73rd minute after clutching the back of his left thigh. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner had been pivotal in the game before his exit, contributing two assists, including one for German Berterame.

Inter Miami later confirmed that medical examinations diagnosed an overload linked to muscular fatigue in Messi’s left hamstring, ruling out any significant tear. Interim manager Guillermo Hoyos sought to ease concerns, attributing the issue to tiredness and difficult playing conditions. “He was tired, the field was heavy,” Hoyos explained, “and rather than doubt, you always say not to take the risk.”

As Argentina embarks on this World Cup journey, Messi stands just three goals behind Miroslav Klose on the all-time World Cup top scorers list and holds the record for the most matches played at 26. His presence on the field is not just a statistical advantage but also a beacon of hope for a nation standing behind their footballing legend.

As Messi prepares for another chapter of his illustrious career, there’s an unmistakable anticipation in the air — a poignant reminder of the fine line between aspiration and pressure in the world of elite sports.
