Leicester City relegated to League One after Hull City draw

A horror season has its nightmare ending for Leicester City as the Foxes are relegated to England’s third tier, 10 years on from winning the Premier League, reports BritPanorama.

Leicester drew 2-2 at home to Hull City, confirming their fall to EFL League One with two matches left in the season. This relegation follows a disastrous campaign that has seen the club suffer back-to-back relegations, finishing 18th last season after previously being champions in 2016.

With just 11 wins from 44 games, Leicester will experience life in the third tier for the first time since 2009, a stark contrast to their recent highs, including a run to the Champions League quarter-finals less than a decade ago.

The Foxes are set to compete alongside lesser-known clubs like Bromley, a club historically outside the Football League. Following their poor performances, warnings about the state of the club have been apparent for some time, as they transitioned from an eighth-place finish in 2022 to fighting for survival.

After reaching the semi-finals of the Conference League, then-manager Brendan Rodgers indicated that the club needed to recalibrate its expectations. The pandemic had severely impacted King Power, Leicester’s owners, and the inability to secure a strong start this season saw Rodgers aim merely for 40 points to stay up, a departure from prior ambitions of competing for top honours.

Leicester’s fall from grace is underscored by the cycle of managerial changes they have experienced. Since Rodgers’ departure in April 2023, Leicester has appointed seven different managers and struggled to find a consistent philosophy, further compounding the club’s woes. Enzo Maresca did secure the Championship title in 2024, yet a lack of stability has persisted with the recent appointment of Steve Cooper following unsuccessful pursuits of other candidates.

The Foxes must now contend with the new reality of League One, reflecting on their glory days while facing a significant challenge ahead to regain their former stature.

In football, fortunes can change quickly, and Leicester’s journey from the pinnacle to the precipice serves as a sobering reminder that success is fleeting, and the path to restoration can be fraught with obstacles.
