Lando Norris retires from the Monaco Grand Prix
Lando Norris has joined Max Verstappen in retiring from the Monaco Grand Prix, reports BritPanorama.
The British driver, who is the reigning F1 champion following his sensational victory in Abu Dhabi last winter, was forced to pull out on the 45th lap due to a power unit problem in his car.
After pulling into the pit lane, the 26-year-old had no option but to call it a day. This setback further dents Norris’s hopes of another F1 title, as he has already been experiencing a challenging campaign.
During the race, Norris had expressed optimism, stating his car was back to ‘normal pace’ before the breakdown. His performance last season culminated in the first crown of his career, but this year has been markedly less fruitful, with just one podium finish to date.
As both Norris and Verstappen exit the Monaco race, they represent a turbulent day for McLaren and Red Bull Racing, respectively. Earlier, Verstappen quit after stalling right at the start due to engine issues. The Dutch driver was visibly upset, venting his frustration over team radio.
Verstappen later elaborated on his circumstances, describing the day’s events as a cascading failure, starting with the formation lap and culminating in a complete engine failure. “I could not go full throttle, so we brought it back [to the pits] and that was it,” he explained.
Both Norris and Verstappen now look to regain their momentum at the upcoming race in Barcelona next Sunday, where they will aim to turn their fortunes around at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
