George Russell wins Canadian Grand Prix sprint race amid team tensions
George Russell claimed victory in the Canadian Grand Prix sprint race, escalating tensions between the Mercedes teammates, Kimi Antonelli and himself, reports BritPanorama.
The contest showcased a fierce rivalry that resulted in on-track contact, with Antonelli veering off the circuit on multiple occasions during intense wheel-to-wheel exchanges. The friction reached a pinnacle as both drivers navigated the challenging Montreal track, where the incident on lap six marked a significant turning point.
Initially maintaining their front-row grid positions, the two Mercedes cars encountered trouble when Antonelli attempted to overtake Russell at turn one. Pushed onto the grass, he managed to retain second. However, a misjudgment on his braking at turn eight caused him to miss the chicane entirely, allowing McLaren’s Lando Norris to capitalise and move ahead of him.
Antonelli later accepted responsibility for jeopardising his position at the chicane, citing a bump that had unsettled his car. Despite that admission, he expressed frustrations over team radio, stating that Russell’s manoeuvres warranted a penalty—a point on which team principal Toto Wolff admonished him to focus on racing rather than voicing grievances.
With less than two laps to go, Antonelli risked another attempt to pass Norris but again found himself running wide. His complaints continued into the cooldown lap, with Wolff advocating for private discussions instead of public grievances.
After the race, Antonelli reiterated his standpoint on the first lap incident: “It was a tough battle. I need to review that. I tried to make my move but I was quite well alongside and got pushed off.”
Russell’s victory marks an essential shift in the championship, closing the gap to Antonelli from a considerable distance to just 18 points, a crucial moment following Antonelli’s three consecutive wins. The competitive landscape has shifted significantly, setting the stage for the main grand prix that follows.
As the team gears up for the forthcoming main event, the increasing tensions within the squad serve as a stark reminder of the fine line between teamwork and rivalry in the high-pressure environment of Formula 1. In such a fast-paced world, even allies can quickly become adversaries on the track.
