Gary Neville rules out run for Manchester mayor

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has set out his plans for the next 10 years as he addressed calls to run for mayor of Manchester, reports BritPanorama.

The 51-year-old had been rumoured to make a bid for the role after Andy Burnham indicated he would step away in pursuit of the Labour leadership, should he win the upcoming Makerfield by-election.

Linking his name to politics since joining the Labour Party over four years ago, Neville has firmly dismissed any suggestions of a mayoral campaign. “I love what I do in my life in Manchester, the business I run with the teams that I work with,” he told The Telegraph.

Neville added, “I’ve committed to that, and I’m not going to basically take a role, or look to take a role, because, to be fair, who knows what would happen right now with the way in which electoral results are going?” He emphasised that he could not envision a scenario where he would consider the mayoral position in the next decade due to his existing commitments.

His involvement in League Two side Salford City and his media work are consuming much of his time. Neville noted, “I’ve just done a partnership with Global, where we’ve launched a five-to-10-year business plan.”

He also mentioned his ongoing work with Salford City and his enthusiasm for his role with Sky Sports. “I love doing Super Sunday. I love football too much,” he stated.

On England’s prospects, Neville commented that the “biggest job” will involve ensuring players like Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson effectively protect the back four. “Those two are going to have to have world-class summers for us to win the tournament,” he remarked.

In this landscape of political speculation and sporting commitments, Neville’s clarity about his intentions provides a refreshing perspective on the often blurred lines between sports and public roles.
