Dramatic crash for Gabriel Bortoleto at Brazilian Grand Prix

Gabriel Bortoleto escaped unharmed after a high-speed collision during the final lap of the Sao Paulo sprint race, as his Sauber briefly lifted off the ground before coming to rest against the barriers, reports BritPanorama.

The 21-year-old Brazilian driver underwent precautionary checks at the circuit medical centre, which confirmed he was uninjured.

The incident unfolded when Bortoleto attempted to overtake Williams driver Alex Albon in slick conditions. As he moved to the outside line, the loss of grip led to the crash, causing his car to collide with the right-side barrier before careening across the track and impacting the opposite wall, briefly becoming airborne.

Despite the significant damage to his car, including a broken steering column, Bortoleto managed to exit the vehicle unaided and was reported to be alert. His family members in the grandstands were quickly informed of his safety.

Reacting to the crash, Albon expressed relief that Bortoleto was unharmed: “I just hope he’s OK,” he commented, reflecting on his own experience with the challenging barriers at the circuit. Bortoleto, now in his debut Formula 1 season, currently ranks 19th in the drivers’ standings with 19 points.

Following the incident, Sauber released a statement thanking the circuit marshals, F1, and FIA medical staff for their prompt response. “Following precautionary checks at the circuit’s Medical Centre, we are pleased to report that Gabriel Bortoleto is ok and uninjured,” they stated, noting the team’s immediate focus on preparing for the upcoming qualifying session.

The sprint race itself was dominated by Lando Norris, who took the victory, followed closely by Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell. Unfortunately for Oscar Piastri, the race ended prematurely due to a spin just six laps in, resulting in no points for him from the event.

As the adrenaline of the race subsides, the focus now shifts to the ongoing repair efforts for Bortoleto’s damaged Sauber and the preparations for qualifying. A reminder, perhaps, of the fine line between spectacle and danger that defines Formula 1.
