Former Manchester City striker Jo detained in Brazil over child support payments
Former Manchester City striker Jo has been detained in Brazil after authorities executed a court order connected to outstanding child support payments, reports BritPanorama.
Police confirmed that the former Brazil international, whose full name is Joao Alves de Assis Silva, was taken into custody on 18 November in Rio de Janeiro while attending a barbecue at a street food kiosk in the coastal district of Barra da Tijuca.
The detention relates to a debt of 220,744.57 Brazilian reals, which is approximately £31,500. It stems from a family court ruling, indicating that Jo has repeatedly failed to meet his child maintenance obligations.
This case was initiated by a warrant filed in the Brazilian state of Bahia, and authorities assert that the order remained active despite Jo’s legal team’s attempts to contest it. Once arrested, Jo was taken to a nearby police station for processing.
Local reports have highlighted that this is not Jo’s first run-in with the law related to financial disputes over child support. Previous incidents involving his arrest have garnered significant attention in Brazilian media.
The dispute involves a child from Jo’s relationship with social media influencer Maiara Quiderolly, focusing on payments related to their son, Joao Gabriel. The couple’s relationship ended after she became pregnant, a situation complicated by Jo’s prior marriage, which has been widely discussed in Brazilian celebrity and sports circles.
Jo’s lawyer, Artur Eugênio Matias, asserted that measures were being taken to resolve the issue, stating that the debt had already been paid. He remarked, “There was an arrest warrant issued in a city in the state of Bahia, for a reasonably small debt. According to the lawyer handling the case, the debt has been paid. Tomorrow this debt, without any doubt, will be paid, and we hope that he will be released.”
However, officials have not yet confirmed whether the outstanding amount has been settled completely. The former forward, who last played for fourth-tier Brazilian club Itabirito, has had a diverse career across various top football leagues.
Jo initially gained fame during his time at Corinthians and CSKA Moscow before moving to Manchester City in 2008. His Premier League tenure included both Manchester City and Everton, followed by a successful spell at Atlético Mineiro. He earned 20 caps for Brazil, scoring five goals, and was part of the squad in the 2014 World Cup, which suffered a historic 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semi-final.
As this situation unfolds, the intersection of celebrity and accountability plays out yet again in the public eye, revealing how even the most renowned athletes are not immune to the complexities of personal responsibility.
