Forest Green Rovers address bacon sandwich incident
Forest Green Rovers have responded to allegations that a Morecambe supporter was expelled from their stadium for eating a bacon sandwich during Saturday’s match, reports BritPanorama.
The National League club, known for being the world’s first fully vegan football team, issued a statement playfully titled “baconbuttygate” to provide clarity on the situation.
“Contrary to social media opinion and wisdom, the ejection was nothing to do with bacon sarnies more a little ‘over-exuberance’ on the last day of the season,” the club stated on X. They added that after multiple warnings, stewards had no choice but to eject the individual.
Manager Robbie Savage also addressed the issue on his BBC Radio 5 Live 606 show, asserting, “I’ve seen that, it’s gone viral today. It’s fake news.” He emphatically denied that any pork products were involved, stating, “I can 100% categorically confirm there was no bacon sandwich.”
For those not familiar with Forest Green’s ethos, the club has led the way in sustainable football, claiming to have introduced the first vegan matchday menu in 2015. Visitors to The New Lawn can expect offerings such as Quorn pies and vegan pizzas rather than traditional stadium fare.
Owner Dale Vince has been instrumental in advocating for renewable energy and sustainable practices, striving to make the Gloucestershire outfit carbon neutral.
On the field, Forest Green Rovers enjoyed a successful day, defeating Morecambe 5-0 and preparing to face Boreham Wood in the National League playoff quarter-finals on Wednesday.
This incident, while unique, serves as a reminder of the club’s commitment to its vegan identity, even as they navigate the nuances of fan interactions. In a world where food choices often spark debate, it’s the performance on the pitch that continues to resonate with supporters.
