Football club owners face serious charges including human trafficking and sexual exploitation

Charges against Maldon and Tiptree FC owners

Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, 57, and his husband Scott, 32, are facing serious allegations including rape, sexual assault, and modern slavery trafficking for sexual exploitation. The couple, known for their ownership of Maldon and Tiptree FC, is set to appear in Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court today, reports BritPanorama.

Both men were apprehended by Essex Police’s Serious Crime Directorate on Wednesday during coordinated operations at multiple locations across the county. This swift action underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating these allegations.

Their residence in Danbury, Essex, was notably a focus of police activity, supported by forensic teams conducting thorough searches. Officers have worked closely with the Crown Prosecution Service since the arrests, indicating a comprehensive legal approach to the investigation.

As part of the inquiry, forensic investigations traversed the Drewitt-Barlow Stadium, the couple’s home, and The Swan pub in Braintree, owned by Barrie Drewitt-Barlow. A Rolls Royce belonging to Drewitt-Barlow was seized during the operation for forensic examination, contributing to the broader evidence-gathering efforts by local law enforcement.

The police presence at their Danbury property was considerable, featuring numerous patrol cars and forensic specialists. The couple completed a significant acquisition of Maldon and Tiptree FC earlier in 2025, and under their ownership, the club has experienced a notable rise in average match-day attendance, reportedly from 70 to 800 spectators.

Despite these achievements, the current legal troubles have led ITV to withdraw a documentary series that was intended to provide an inside look at the football club’s operations, highlighting the swift fallout from the ongoing investigation.

As the case unfolds, it raises questions about the intersection of sport, celebrity, and criminal accountability in the UK’s non-league football scene. This situation serves as a stark reminder of the complexities faced by clubs and individuals in the public eye, where success can quickly be overshadowed by serious allegations.
