England fans expect disappointing World Cup performance as over 80% fear early exit

England fans are increasingly pessimistic ahead of the World Cup, with over 80 percent fearing that the Three Lions will be eliminated early, reports BritPanorama.

A mere 30 percent believe England will advance to the quarter-finals, reflecting a growing sense of hopelessness among supporters as they consider the competitive landscape. The findings, conducted by BOYLE Sports, indicate that only 16 percent of those surveyed expect England to lift the trophy.

Concerns among fans are centred around the quality of opposing nations, with 38 percent citing this as their primary worry, while 29 percent expressed doubts regarding player form. This skepticism appears to have shifted expectations, with many suggesting that England’s best chances for securing a major title lie in the upcoming European Championships of 2020 and 2024.

France, with 16 percent of preference, is the most commonly expected winner among England fans, followed by Spain at 13 percent and Brazil at 10 percent. Interestingly, nearly one in ten Scottish supporters predict that their rivals from the south will claim the title.

Survey results from 1,965 fans across England, Scotland, and Ireland show that 36 percent of England supporters consider the tournament a success only if their team emerges victorious. Conversely, 38 percent acknowledged the unrealistic expectations held by some fellow supporters.

Should England exit the tournament prematurely, the largest segment—16 percent—would likely shift their support to Scotland, while Brazil, France, and Spain would each attract nine percent. Only five percent of fans would be satisfied with merely progressing beyond the group stage.

Brian O’Keeffe, spokesman for BOYLE Sports, noted that years of near misses appear to have cultivated a more realistic outlook among England fans, as many question whether this current squad possesses the ability to surpass expectations.

As anticipation builds around England’s World Cup campaign, the prevailing mood among supporters serves as a testament to the complexities of fandom and hope, mirroring the broader narratives of success and struggle in international sport.
