Lando Norris claims victory at Hungarian Grand Prix
Lando Norris has fired a psychological salvo at championship frontrunner Kimi Antonelli, insisting that the burden of expectation rests squarely on the Italian teenager’s shoulders, reports BritPanorama.
The British driver, defending his world title in a McLaren that has largely been outpaced by Mercedes this campaign, secured a morale-boosting triumph at the Hungarian Grand Prix. This marked Norris’s first race victory since the Sao Paulo Grand Prix last November, ending an eight-month winless streak. A significant upgrade package transformed McLaren’s competitiveness at the Hungaroring, propelling Norris to a dominant performance throughout the weekend.
“The pressure is on him,” Norris declared of Antonelli. “There is no pressure on me. I have been feeling very confident.”
The result has injected fresh intrigue into the 2026 title battle as Formula One heads into its summer hiatus. Antonelli arrives at the four-week break commanding a formidable 50-point advantage atop the drivers’ standings, built on an impressive haul of six victories from the opening 11 races.
Lewis Hamilton occupies second place, with George Russell a further nine points behind his Mercedes teammate. Russell’s campaign has been blighted by a succession of mechanical failures that have undermined his challenge. Norris, meanwhile, is currently 91 points off the lead—a substantial deficit by any measure. His McLaren has simply not matched the pace of the dominant Silver Arrows for much of the season. However, with a dozen rounds remaining on the calendar after the summer break, the arithmetic is not entirely against the reigning champion.
Norris pointed to a contrast in execution between the two teams, stating: “They (Mercedes) have made more mistakes as a team, and we have made less and we have come strong, but I expect them to still win races and expect us to win more races.” The 26-year-old acknowledged that replicating Hungary’s superiority at every circuit would prove challenging.
“We were the quickest in Hungary from qualifying to the race,” he said. “Not every race is going to be this simple, so we need to work hard to try to get the car to be this good everywhere.” On whether a genuine title assault remains feasible, Norris was forthright: “And if we can, maybe that is a genuine question. We just need to be perfect from here for the whole year.” Norris can draw confidence from recent history; last season, Max Verstappen trailed by 104 points yet mounted a remarkable recovery that carried the title fight to a tense decider in Abu Dhabi.
In a notable development away from the track, Red Bull confirmed they have recruited Gwen Lagrue from Mercedes. The Frenchman is widely credited with identifying Antonelli’s talent and nurturing his progression to a race seat alongside Hamilton at the Silver Arrows. Lagrue also played a key role in Russell’s development through the junior ranks. He will assume responsibility for Red Bull’s young driver programme from next year, representing a significant coup for the Milton Keynes outfit.
The Formula One season resumes at Zandvoort on 24 August following the summer break, where the unfolding championship narrative will continue to captivate motorsport fans, as well as the strategic maneuvers off the track that shadow the fierce on-track rivalries.
