Emma Raducanu has reunited with the coach who guided her to one of the most remarkable triumphs in tennis history, with Andrew Richardson returning to her team ahead of the French Open, reports BritPanorama.
The British No 1 will begin working with Richardson immediately as they prepare for the Strasbourg International, where Raducanu is set to return to competitive play next week after a lengthy absence caused by illness.
Richardson is widely recognized for his role in overseeing Raducanu’s stunning victory at the US Open in 2021, making her the first qualifier to ever win a Grand Slam singles title. This reunion comes nearly five years after the two parted ways, a decision that drew considerable criticism at the time. Raducanu had indicated that she needed a coach with more experience on the WTA Tour.
Having moved through several different coaches since then, Raducanu is now turning back to a familiar figure, who has been part of her journey since her early teenage years. “Grateful to have reconnected with someone who has known me for over a decade now and looking forward to building together one iteration at a time,” Raducanu stated. This shift underscores her growing emphasis on trust and familiarity in her coaching choices.
Richardson follows a series of coaches in Raducanu’s career, including Nick Cavaday and Mark Petchey. The recent speculation about their reunion intensified when Raducanu trained with him at the Ferrer Tennis Academy in Spain last month, although she downplayed indications that this arrangement would become permanent at that time.
Raducanu has not competed since March due to a virus that disrupted her season, leading to withdrawals from tournaments in Miami, Linz, Madrid, and Rome. Despite these setbacks, she achieved encouraging results earlier in the season by reaching the final at the Transylvania Open in Romania. She faces a projected drop to around No 37 in the world rankings next week, which may result in her missing a seeded position at the forthcoming French Open.
The road back to form for Raducanu appears filled with both challenges and support, a reminder of the intricate balance of personal relationships and professional aspirations that define any athlete’s career in the spotlight.
