Dean Saunders discusses Liverpool's clash with Manchester City amid ongoing financial scandal

Liverpool prepares for crucial showdown against Manchester City

Former Liverpool star Dean Saunders has weighed in on his old side’s blockbuster contest against Manchester City, which takes place today amid controversy surrounding the Citizens, who have been found guilty of 114 charges for breaching Premier League financial rules, reports BritPanorama.

Manchester City has lodged an appeal against the charges, with manager Enzo Maresca expressing his “complete trust” in the board. However, the ongoing scandal casts a shadow over the entire fixture.

Saunders believes Liverpool’s recent victory over Bournemouth before the international break was crucial for the team under new boss Andoni Iraola, setting a positive tone ahead of the encounter against City. “I think Liverpool are doing okay. They really needed that result against Bournemouth,” he noted, highlighting the importance of momentum at this stage of the season.

In his comments, Saunders remarked on the pressure Iraola could have faced had the Reds not secured that win, stating, “There was plenty of relief in the dressing room once they got over the line.” Despite challenges, he sees the start of the season as something Liverpool can build on, marking it as an “okay start.”

Saunders also praised the form of Alexander Isak, acknowledging his impact early in the season. He noted, “There have been a couple of standout players in the opening five games,” pointing out Isak’s four goals as a highlight for the Manchester side. He added that the partnership between Isak and other emerging talents like Bradley Barcola could be vital moving forward.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, both Isak and Cody Gakpo will miss the match today due to injuries sustained during the international break. Iraola confirmed, “Unfortunately for us, both got injuries during the international break,” expressing frustration at the bad luck surrounding the squad as they prepare for this crucial clash.

The highly anticipated match between Liverpool and Manchester City is set to kick off at 4:30 PM, with the charges against City continuing to dominate the pre-game agenda.

As the teams take to the pitch, the broader implications of the Citizens’ predicament continue to rumble, suggesting that what happens on the field could be secondary to the seismic shifts off it. In football, as in life, the past can cast a long shadow over the present.
