Dan Burn suffers serious injury in Tyne-Wear derby

England and Newcastle defender Dan Burn suffered a punctured lung and a broken rib at the weekend as his side were defeated 1-0 by rivals Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby, reports BritPanorama.

The centre-back was forced off just before half-time after a nasty collision with Nordi Mukiele, who received a yellow card for the poorly timed sliding challenge. Burn attempted to continue playing but was replaced in the 42nd minute by Fabian Schar after informing medical staff at the interval that he was struggling to breathe.

It is anticipated that Burn will be sidelined for approximately six weeks, potentially missing as many as 10 matches. His absence adds to Newcastle’s mounting injury crisis, which currently includes fellow defenders Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles, and Emil Krafth.

Despite his injury, Burn’s prospects for national selection remain hopeful, as England’s next matches are not scheduled until March, allowing for his recovery. The defeat represented a disappointing afternoon for Newcastle, who fell to Sunderland after an own goal by Nick Woltemade secured the home side all three points.

Following a lacklustre first half, Sunderland took the lead one minute after the break when Woltemade inadvertently headed a cross from Mukiele into his own net. This victory extended Sunderland’s unbeaten league run against Newcastle in the Tyne-Wear derby to 10 matches, elevating them to seventh in the table, while Newcastle slipped back to 12th.

A minute’s applause was held before kick-off in memory of Sunderland cult hero Gary Rowell, who passed away on Saturday following a battle with leukaemia. The match, characterized by physicality and limited clear chances, ultimately ended in favour of the Black Cats, ensuring that the fierce rivalry continues to deliver its share of drama and emotion.

In the end, it’s a sobering reminder of the brutal nature of football; one collision can change a player’s life and reshape a season in mere seconds. The echoes of victory for Sunderland reverberate through their fans, while Newcastle must now contend with the stark realities of injury and competition.
