Coco Gauff has spoken out against racist abuse she received from gamblers following her early exit from the Madrid Open this week, reports BritPanorama.
The 22-year-old American, who has achieved success with both US Open and French Open titles, faced a defeat in the Round of 16 on Monday against Linda Noskova.
In a TikTok post on Wednesday, Gauff directly confronted those behind the abuse, stating, “@ the angry gamblers saying racist things in my IG comments/dms hiding behind anonymous accounts.” Her message underscored how bettors, frustrated by their losses, resorted to personal attacks through social media.
This incident reflects a worrying trend linked to the rapid expansion of legal sports wagering in the United States. The American Gaming Association reported that the industry generated a record $16.96 billion in revenue last year, with predictions showing little sign of slowing.
Despite this growth, punters faced substantial losses, amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars on legal bets in 2025, which represents an approximately 11 per cent increase from the previous year.
Tennis players, facing their competitions individually, are particularly exposed to such backlash. Gauff’s journey in Madrid had already been complicated by health issues; she struggled with digestive problems during her Round of 32 match against Sorana Cirstea, requiring a medical timeout due to her condition.
Her TikTok response included lyrics from rapper Young M.A.: “Yeah they hate, but they broke though / And when it’s time to pop, they a no-show.” This comment encapsulated her resilience amidst personal attacks and the challenges that come with professional sports, where the pressures of performance can elicit severe reactions from fans and gamblers alike.
