Christian Horner’s return to F1 delayed amid Alpine negotiations
Christian Horner’s hoped return to the Formula One paddock has been postponed following a statement from the Renault Group, which oversees Alpine, indicating there are currently “no discussions” with the former Red Bull team principal, reports BritPanorama.
After being dismissed by Red Bull following the British Grand Prix last year, Horner has sought a reinstatement in the sport. Alpine confirmed that he was among potential investors interested in acquiring Otro Capital’s 24 percent stake in the team.
Renault Group CEO Francois Provost elaborated: “There is no discussion today with Christian. We are assessing the options. I want the Renault Group to keep the control of our team, whoever could be the successor of Otro.” He insisted that the issues surrounding Otro do not affect the team’s operations since Renault remains in control.
Horner has expressed that he has “unfinished business” in Formula One, and he is linked with other entities, including Aston Martin and the Chinese automaker BYD, for potentially leading a new team in the future. However, Provost’s comments seem to dampen immediate prospects for a deal.
When asked about the possibility of Horner’s involvement, Provost replied, “Today, there is no discussion,” reinforcing the idea that Renault would exercise control over any changes to ownership. Meanwhile, Alpine, which ended last season at the bottom of the constructors’ championship, currently sits fifth this year. Their performance has notably improved, narrowly missing a podium finish at the Monaco Grand Prix due to penalties imposed on driver Pierre Gasly.
Next season, Alpine will be rebranded as the Gucci Racing Alpine Formula One Team following a partnership with the renowned Italian luxury brand. Provost described this as a unique and historic collaboration, highlighting the synergy between luxury branding and cutting-edge automotive technology.
As the focus shifts to the future, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the dynamic unfolds and whether Horner can reclaim a foothold in the fast-paced world of Formula One.
