Calum McFarlane to lead Chelsea against Manchester City after Enzo Maresca's departure

Chelsea appoint Calum McFarlane as interim head coach

Chelsea have confirmed that Under-21s head coach Calum McFarlane will take charge of the first team for Sunday’s Premier League encounter against Manchester City, reports BritPanorama.

The announcement follows Enzo Maresca’s sudden departure from Stamford Bridge by mutual consent on New Year’s Day. The Italian’s exit was prompted by a significant disagreement with the club’s senior leadership, ending his 18-month spell in west London.

Maresca led Chelsea to two trophies in 2025 and managed to return the team to the top four, yet the club hierarchy decided a change was necessary to revive the campaign. The timing leaves the Blues scrambling just three days before facing Pep Guardiola’s title contenders.

McFarlane, 40, is set to address journalists at Friday’s pre-match press conference, taking the slot originally scheduled for Maresca before his abrupt exit. Having joined Chelsea only last summer, he previously oversaw the youth development at Southampton for two years and began his coaching journey at Manchester City.

His return to the Etihad will come under considerably different circumstances. Chelsea’s recent form presents a challenging task for the interim boss, as the team has secured just one victory in their last seven Premier League fixtures, raising concerns at the club’s board level.

Manchester City currently sits second in the league table and is poised to take advantage of Chelsea’s misfortunes. McFarlane has achieved notable success with the development squad, leading them to six wins from nine Premier League 2 matches this season. He has worked closely with promising players and senior squad members alike.

Liam Rosenior, manager of Strasbourg, has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Maresca on a permanent basis. Reports indicate the club are optimistic about finalising their appointment within days. However, no permanent manager will be in place before Sunday’s fixture, and McFarlane is not expected to remain in charge beyond this weekend’s encounter.

The stakes could not be higher for Chelsea as they prepare for this crucial match. One can only wonder how the interim leadership might influence not only the team’s performance but also the looming decisions that will shape Chelsea’s future.
