Brooks Koepka reflects on personal tragedy and golf comeback
Brooks Koepka has opened up about the devastating family tragedy he and wife Jena Sims endured last year, revealing how losing their unborn child affected them deeply, reports BritPanorama.
The five-time major champion spoke candidly to reporters following his opening round at the PGA Championship on Thursday, offering a rare glimpse into his personal struggles. Koepka shared that the couple discovered in October 2025 that Sims had suffered a miscarriage at 16 weeks, a loss that took a significant toll on both of them.
“We had a lot of family issues go on last year,” Koepka said. “That took a toll on me… and it definitely took a toll on Jena.” The couple later posted an emotional message on social media about their experience, stating, “At 16 weeks, we learned that our baby’s heart had stopped beating. This is a grief no parent is ever prepared for. We are devastated, but remain hopeful to give Crew a sibling one day,” referencing their two-year-old son who was born prematurely in 2023.
As recently as February this year, Sims expressed her focus on healing and their son during an Instagram Q&A. Koepka described his current situation as a significant improvement, noting that greater domestic harmony has made his professional life much more manageable. “At home it’s in a much better place. It’s easier to come out to work when everything at home lines up,” he explained, indicating that he now views his circumstances as an opportunity for renewal.
Despite the past year’s challenges, which Koepka attributed to personal matters rather than his golf game, he is finding himself in a “better place.” He stated, “It’s exciting. It’s a little bit of a fresh start.” His Thursday performance at Aronimink Golf Club showed glimpses of his potential; although he struggled on the greens, ranking 134th in putting, his iron play was impressive, placing him second for strokes gained from tee to green.
Koepka departed LIV Golf at the end of 2025 and rejoined the PGA Tour in January through the Returning Member Programme. While his early results were mixed, he has recently shown improvement, with top-15 finishes at events such as the Cognizant Classic, The Players Championship, and the Masters. As he continues to navigate both personal and professional challenges, the spotlight remains on how a new chapter in his life may redefine his approach to the sport.
