Josh Mauro, former NFL star, dies at 35

British-born NFL player Josh Mauro has passed away at the age of 35, reports BritPanorama.

Mauro played as a defensive end, having spent three years with the Arizona Cardinals before later joining the New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was instrumental in his teams’ defensive strategies throughout his eight-year career.

Born in St Albans, England, his family relocated to the United States when he was three years old, where he grew up in Texas. Mauro also played college football for the Stanford Cardinal, making a mark on the college scene before moving to the NFL.

His father, Greg Mauro, announced the news of his passing on social media, expressing deep sorrow: “With many tears and broken hearts, yet anchored in the unshakable certainty that our precious Josh Mauro is now healed and made new – living in the presence of the Lord – we humbly covet your prayers as our family walks through the devastating loss of our amazing son, brother, uncle, grandson and friend.”

Two of Mauro’s former teams, the Cardinals and the Raiders, have both offered tributes. The Cardinals stated: “We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Josh Mauro. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who knew him. We extend our deepest condolences to everyone grieving this loss.”

Former Cardinals player and executive Adrian Wilson remarked on Mauro’s reliability and work ethic, saying, “I had the opportunity to be around Josh for several years. He was always in shape, always ready to go wherever he got that call.” Despite being undrafted, Mauro left a significant mark in the league with 150 tackles and five sacks over 80 games.

Reflecting on his career in 2017 during a return to the UK, Mauro noted, “Every Sunday when I take the field I appreciate it. I am grateful, and I embrace it. It’s a blessing to be out there. This game has been wonderful to me.”

His legacy, marked by resilience and dedication, serves as a poignant reminder of the intersection between sport and the human experience — a journey perhaps more shared than we often acknowledge. The loss reverberates through the NFL community, highlighting not just a player’s impact on the field, but also the connections formed off it.
