Aryna Sabalenka booed off Centre Court after Wimbledon exit

Aryna Sabalenka faced a barrage of boos from the Wimbledon crowd following her fourth-round exit, as she succumbed to Naomi Osaka in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6, on Centre Court, reports BritPanorama.

The turning point of the match came after Osaka secured victory, when Sabalenka, visibly frustrated, sent a ball soaring out of the stadium, prompting a strong reaction from the audience as she walked to shake hands with her opponent.

This defeat constitutes Sabalenka’s earliest departure from a Grand Slam since the 2022 French Open and marks the first time she has lost in straight sets during a major since the 2020 US Open, signalling a notable shift in her dominant form.

In snapping Sabalenka’s impressive streak of 21 consecutive tiebreak wins at Grand Slam events, Osaka not only advanced to her first Wimbledon quarter-final but also achieved a milestone by reaching the last eight at a Grand Slam outside of hard courts.

Straight after the match, Sabalenka offered a candid take on her feelings, saying, “I don’t even want to think about ranking at this point. I just want to go get completely drunk, forget about tennis, and try to get in better shape.” She also reflected on her close call with losing composure during the match, adding, “There were a couple of times where I could just completely lose it, but I was respectful to the grass and to the next players who are going to play there, so I held myself really good.”

The outcome means that the women’s Singles draw at Wimbledon will see a new champion for the tenth consecutive year. As the tournament progresses, fans and players alike are reminded of the delicate balance between pressure and performance in sport, and how quickly fortunes can shift on the grand stage.
