Argentina's Cristian Romero criticizes Gary Neville after England's World Cup exit

Cristian Romero’s passionate response to Gary Neville following World Cup victory

Cristian Romero issued a pointed critique of Gary Neville after Argentina secured a place in their second consecutive World Cup final with a 2-1 victory over England on Wednesday night, reports BritPanorama.

The Tottenham defender revealed that he drew inspiration from Neville’s pre-match criticism during the match in Atlanta, where Argentina stormed back from a goal down. Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez netted late goals to thwart England’s hopes of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966.

After the game, Romero left little doubt that Neville’s remarks had left an impression. “Lisandro and me, we were on fire before the game because of what Gary Neville said,” he declared. The former Manchester United captain had labelled the Argentine centre-backs as “the best worst centre-half pairing in the world” due to their propensity for both brilliance and blunders.

Romero continued, “In England they love to speak before. We send him a big hug… I hope I’ll not be like him when I retire, I will NOT criticise players. The only thing that I hope for is that when I retire, I am not that stupid,” reinforcing his disdain for pre-match comments.

Despite his sharp remarks, Neville’s criticisms also acknowledged the duo’s formidable mentality, praising them for their key roles in the team’s advancement through the tournament. Martinez also responded to Neville’s comments, stating, “We’re used to people always talking about us. It seems like they like doing it, and we respond on the pitch, that’s it, always with respect.”

The match saw England strike first with a goal from Anthony Gordon shortly after the break, appearing to set them on course for victory. However, a shift in momentum allowed Argentina to control the game in the latter stages. Their persistence paid off when Enzo Fernandez equalised with a powerful shot from outside the box, and deep into stoppage time, Lautaro Martinez clinched the victory with a header.

Looking ahead, Argentina will face Spain in the final on Sunday. The triumph over England not only demonstrates their resilience but also solidifies their status as reigning champions, eager to defend their title on the world stage.

This encounter serves as a timely reminder of the fierce rivalries that envelop the World Cup, as players balance competitive intensity with moments of personal rivalry off the pitch. In sports, such exchanges often fuel the fire, igniting performances beyond expectation.
