Petition for FIFA to replay World Cup final gains momentum amid controversy
A petition initiated by Argentine supporters urging FIFA to replay the 2026 World Cup final is rapidly approaching the 100,000-signature mark on Change.org, fueled by allegations of corruption against Slovenian match official Slavko Vincic, reports BritPanorama.
Spain captured the title with a 1-0 victory over the defending champions on Sunday in New Jersey, prompting widespread outrage among Argentina’s fanbase.
The campaign, led by Argentine supporter Gisela Sanchez, alleges that Vincic was bribed to influence the match’s outcome. The appeal calls on FIFA to annul the result and conduct a rematch.
By Thursday afternoon, the petition had surpassed 82,000 signatures and continued to gain traction, although it holds no legal weight. Argentina’s performance on the pitch, where they failed to register a single shot on target during the full 120 minutes, offers little support to claims of injustice.
Enzo Fernandez received a red card in the 93rd minute for a second yellow, having previously been cautioned. Vincic allocated 46 fouls during the game, with 25 against Argentina, yet Sanchez’s petition maintains that the outcome was manipulated.
“The recent final between Argentina and Spain was tarnished by the controversial and corrupt performance of the referee who, according to video evidence, was bought to influence the match’s outcome,” the petition states.
The post-match atmosphere was further troubled when Argentina’s Nahuel Molina appeared to strike Spain’s Rodri during the latter’s celebration, while Leandro Paredes confronted Gavi and Eric García. FIFA has announced it will investigate the conduct of Argentina’s players following the final.
Former player Gary Neville did not hold back in his critique of Argentina’s behaviour throughout the tournament. “It’s a disgrace,” he said. “I love the competitiveness of the Argentines, fighting and scrapping for their lives, Messi has propped them up, but it’s been a disgrace the last few games.”
The petition carries no formal authority under FIFA’s regulations, with the governing body providing no indication that it will consider the request. Match outcomes cannot be reversed based on online campaigns, regardless of the support they gather.
This is not the first petition of its kind during 2026’s World Cup, as French supporters also sought to contest a penalty awarded after their semi-final defeat to Spain. That initiative similarly exceeded 80,000 signatures but yielded no results. Meanwhile, a counter-petition calling for Argentina’s exclusion from future World Cups reportedly gathered over 29 million signatures before closure, suggesting that while the enthusiasm for digital protest thrives, the potential for genuine impact remains elusive.
As the tournament unfolds, this episode serves as a stark reminder of how contentious the beautiful game can be, where the fervor of fans often collides with the stark realities of officiating in high-stakes matches.
