Alex Scott determined to end Football Focus on a high note
Alex Scott is determined to end Football Focus on a high note as she presented its first show since news of the programme being axed, reports BritPanorama.
The broadcaster acknowledged the cutting of the show at the start of the episode following declining viewership figures which led the BBC to remove it from its schedules.
The former England international welcomed viewers with a nod to Declan Rice’s words: “It’s not done, it’s not done yet,” highlighting the remaining five games in the Premier League title race and the five episodes left in the proud history of Football Focus.
Earlier this week, the BBC confirmed that after 52 years on air, the show would come to an end. Scott reflected on her time by stating, “To have been part of it has been incredibly special, and I’m so grateful and proud of the eight years I’ve been involved, including the five years I’ve had the honour of presenting it.”
She noted, “We’ve got to finish our 52nd season strong, beginning today with a ‘tough-tackling’ partnership of Ashley Williams and Farah Williams.” This season will close on a note of nostalgia, as Scott has been a prominent figure since 2021.
In addition to her on-screen presence, Scott conveyed her appreciation for the people she worked with, emphasizing the connections built through shared experiences: “I’ve loved so much of it, the conversations, the laughter, and sharing so many big moments with you, the audience. Thank you for being part of it.”
Reflecting on the changing landscape of sports broadcasting, Scott explained the challenges faced by Football Focus: “When this show began all those years ago, social media wasn’t a driving force, podcasts didn’t exist, and there was no instant access to information in the way there is today.” She highlighted that viewer habits have shifted significantly, making traditional TV broadcasts less essential as digital options proliferate.
BBC Sport chief Alex Kay-Jelski backed Scott following the announcement, calling her “one of our finest presenters” and indicating her continued importance in the network’s future programming, including major tournaments and the Women’s Super League.
Mark Lawrenson, a long-time contributor to the show, remarked that Football Focus had “served its time,” noting the transition in audience preferences over its decades-long run. The programme is set to air its final episode at the end of this season, marking the conclusion of a significant chapter in British sports broadcasting.
As the final curtain approaches, it’s a poignant reminder of the challenges and triumphs that shapes sports media. In a world increasingly driven by rapid digital consumption, Scott’s heartfelt farewell not only underscores the legacy of Football Focus but also illustrates the fragile bridge between cherished tradition and evolving viewer habits.
